CHALLENGE
Luck Stone is the nation’s largest family owned (multiple generations) and operated producer of crushed stone, sand and gravel, it currently has 30 live operations.
The project was identified initially as an integration to an existing system Luck Stone had employed on its site in Atlanta. Previously they produced a washed sand via a traditional sand screw however the customer was not getting the desired specification, leaving it unsuitable and undesirable to potential buyers. In order to meet some specifications, it had to inefficiently blend this sand into other products through double handling.
Additionally the customer was experiencing sand loss to both the belt press and ponds and sought a solution to maximise output.
SOLUTION
Luck Stone has a huge history in the sand and gravel market, and its reputation supersedes this, therefore this integration was met with a strong technical discussion and structured approach.
We found through various sand gradations and analysis, that to produce an in spec concrete sand, the removal of the 30-50# sand was essential, but this also had to be done in an optimised environment. Our EvoWash™ was able to retain all sellable sand, reduce the amount of sand being lost to waste ponds and produce an optimised washed concrete sand product. The sand produced is also a lot drier than the previous sand screw process, this therefore saves on water retention for the process and also a cleaner operating environment for the mine site.
Our EvoWash allows the operator to make adjustments to the blending of final products as they discharge of the dewatering screen. It also allows adjustment in the feedbox, prior to material entering the dewatering screen leaving a complete adjustable cut point in “real-time’. Essential for a potentially fluctuating feed. This enables the operator to perform a consistent and optimised concrete sand product.
RESULTS
With the EvoWash integration, Luck Stone has increased its output and is creating an in spec product that can be sold straight off the belt. It’s also capturing previously lost fines and reducing the need to blend sand.
Mike Maldonado, Plant Manager at Luck Stone says “Customer support is very important and the partnership with CDE is very important. Having that support and customer service has always been key. For me, as busy as we are here with everything that's going on, it's important to have that person who picks up the phone and you can contact that person, they can give you the information or get you the information you need or direct you to the people that are doing that, they're going to take care of your problem.”
Craig Johnston, Business Development Manager at CDE says, “This project is a great accomplishment, our install team worked with Luck Stone to do complete this install over a weekend to minimize their downtime and thanks to all the collaboration and planning that had happened with engineering with both companies prior, the install went smoothly on site.”
