Effective Recycling Solutions for Trommel Fines
Trommel fines are residues from mechanical skip waste recycling processes which cannot be treated effectively in a dry process and therefore require further treatment to recover resources or avoid higher landfill tax rates.
In the UK, fines must meet the Loss On Ignition (LOI) threshold of 10 % or less in order to qualify for lower landfill tax rates.
Even with lower landfill tax rates, disposal of trommel fines is still not the ideal outcome as it still incurs costs and does not align to many companies’ ethos and goals around sustainability.
Many of the resources which make up trommel fines can be resold and reused and therefore should not be sent to landfill. However, the fibrous nature of these fines often makes them difficult to separate and recycle.
CDE’s recycling solution employs density separation techniques and wet processing technology to sort and wash the fines, recovering valuable products for reuse and removing contamination to allow the ‘waste’ to be diverted from landfill.
Our wet processing equipment can divert up to 80% of trommel fines from landfill.
Efficient Washing of Trommel Fines
Trommel fines consist of materials such as wood, aggregate, sand, glass and organics.
Through density separation techniques, CDE’s recycling solutions sizes and separates materials in order to recover as many valuable resources as possible.
CDE’s trommel fines solution washes the waste products removes contamination from sand, grit and stone, liberating unwanted lightweight matter. The solution is also designed with the contamination levels of the waste in mind and can remove heavy metal and hydrocarbons.
By washing the inert materials to remove contamination, clean sand and aggregates extracted from the trommel fines waste can be resold and reused in the secondary aggregates market to close the loop on waste.
Kiely Bros Diverts 80% of Trommel Fines Through 30tph CDE Recycling Plant
Kiely Bros is a specialist highway surface treatment contractor, based in the West Midlands and operating across the England, Scotland and Wales. Originally specialising only in surface dressing, the company has expanded rapidly into a broad range of services within waste management, cleaning and recycling.
Kiely Bros produces over 600 tonnes of trommel fines waste per week at its skip waste dry recycling plant in Birmingham. The CDE recycling plant accepts 30 tonnes per hour of trommel fines which after washing and sorting produces a range of valuable aggregates for Kiely Bros, diverting at least 80% of the waste from landfill.
