Lessons from the Field: Spiess & Feiring

Recent projects with Entreprise Spiess and Feiring Bruk in Norway highlight the value of conducting a PMI. In both cases, CDE worked closely with on-site teams to inspect the plant and plan maintenance. 

At both sites, PMI visits revealed early wear in components, such as impellers in a Pemo sludge pump. Because these were spotted early, parts were ordered and replaced swiftly preventing unplanned delays and extended downtime. 

Another critical step was ensuring pumps and pipework were properly drained before their planned winter shutdown. Even a small amount of water left behind can freeze, expand, and crack a pump casing. CDE’s shutdown process includes full drainage of all water systems—removing this risk entirely. 

Additionally, both sites benefitted from informal training as CDE engineers conducted the inspections. Plant operators shadowed the process, giving them practical insight into how to assess wear and carry out future checks—helping build on-site knowledge and self-sufficiency.
